Akilah started school this week at the Little Round Schoolhouse; this amazing little Waldof-inspired program on the teachers' property in Haw Creek (East Asheville). They accept a total of 12 children ages 3-6 years. But based on Akilah's development and fact that she can toilet independently, she was able to start now even though she will not be 3 until January. We were not really looking at starting her so young, but were afraid a spot would not be available mid year. Plus, more importantly, she was very ready and excited to go to school like a big girl! She goes every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9-1 and was bummed on Friday when she had to stay home to play.
The schoolhouse is this very sweet yurt outfitted with an array of natural toys. They also have plenty of garden and yard space to spend a significant amount of time outside each day in all kinds of weather. This week (at least the fragmented details we have gotten thus far) Akilah helped harvest tomatoes from the garden, cut vegetables for snack, made hummus, made fruit salad, brushed Mazzy the bunny, sang songs, played with new friends, helped build a kitchen, and was very good at following directions and listening during circle times.
