Exhibition Night - Kindergarten

Last evening Akilah had Exhibition Night at school. This is where all the classrooms get to show off what they have been working on during their latest Expeditions (it's an expeditionary learning school and ELS originated from Outward Bound; what can I say.)

The Kindergartners had been working on their Helping Hands, Helping Hearts expedition all about community helpers for the past few months. During the weeks prior to exhibition night, each child had selected a community worker, interviewed that worker, learned about what they do to help the community, what tools they use, took photos of the place they work, etc. Then during art class each child made a 3-D model of the place their worker and during writer's workshop they wrote and edited books about their workers. They also brought in tools used by their worker and practiced acting in the role of their worker and answering questions all in preparation for the big night.

Akilah selected Art Teacher and interviewed an art teacher friend of ours at a local middle school.

SO during exhibition night each child dressed up as their worker and the classroom was transformed into Forever Kid's Fun Town and we all "drove" around the town (they had even made us little steering wheels to use upon entering the room) meeting all the community workers. So fun! The teachers had all done an amazing job working with the children on this project over the past few weeks and I was rather impressed with Akilah's ability to act in the role of "Art Teacher" answering questions from all the townspeople strolling past.
