España - Days 4 and 5

Well, yesterday (day 4) we spent the entire day at our home away from home with Akilah having the largest meltdown she has ever had.

Up to this point since arriving at the airport in Madrid we had allowed her to eat gluten, dairy, and sweet treats as an exception because 1) we are on "vacation",  2) we didn't want to be difficult, and 3) these three items seem to make up a large majority of diets here. BUT Akilah's body simply cannot handle eating those items. In addition to a complete unhealthy shift in her diet, she also cannot continue the crazy hours here, needing to function on little sleep. Because she hasn't taken daily naps since she was a baby, expecting her to all of the sudden nap during siesta was incredibly unrealistic. But dinner doesn't occur until 10 or 11pm and everyone stays up late.

At home during the week we eat dinner at 5pm, take a bath, get ready for bed, and settle in for the night, falling asleep between 7 and 8. Then Akilah needs to get up at 7am to get ready for school. Needless to say this shift in scheduling has been too much to sustain. After Akilah's day-long meltdown, she passed out at 6pm and took a long siesta. Here we are lounging before bedtime.

Kaia and Yayo

(Now on to day 5!)

Today we woke up at 10:30am and drove to El Puerto de Santa María where we boarded a boat! We took the boat across the bay to the city of Cádiz. There we drank coffee in a café, walked around Cadiz, saw a really old ampetheater that was being restored, saw a cathedral, walked around some more, walked through a big market (Akilah enjoyed seeing the raw octopus and fish), ate lunch consisting of a variety of fried fish, and walked around some more. When we returned to Rota for siesta and I hung out with Kaia while Tony took Akilah to the beach for sunset. After siesta Ada took me clothing shopping at a thrift store. What a fun, full day! And now for the photos!
